Privacy policy

Last updated: 23 October 2026

Transtube is a browser extension. This page says what it stores, what it sends and where it goes. In short: by default Transtube has no account, no server of its own that receives your data, and no analytics. An optional cloud sync is coming soon, and this page also says what it will store.

What stays on your device

By default Transtube keeps its data in your browser, and none of it is sent to Transtube. Optional cloud sync, described below, will change that only if you turn it on.

  • Settings: the AI provider you chose, your API key or endpoint, your sign-in tokens if you connect a ChatGPT account, and your display and prompt preferences. They are kept in the extension’s storage.
  • Notes, finished summaries and key insights, and a cache of recently opened transcripts. They are kept in a database inside the extension.

What is sent, and to whom

When you chat, summarize or ask for key insights, the extension sends the video’s transcript and your request to the AI provider you picked: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google (Gemini), the OpenAI-compatible endpoint you entered, or OpenAI when you sign in with ChatGPT. Only that provider receives it, and it handles the data under its own terms and privacy policy.

To read a video’s transcript, the extension requests the captions from YouTube while you are on the video’s page. No Transtube server is involved.

Your keys and sign-in

Your API key is read only by the extension’s background worker and its settings page, never by the YouTube page, and it is sent only to the provider it belongs to.

If you sign in with ChatGPT, you approve Transtube on OpenAI’s own page. The access and refresh tokens stay in the extension’s storage on your device, and the usage counts against your ChatGPT plan. You can disconnect in the extension’s settings, and manage or revoke access in your ChatGPT settings.

Optional cloud sync (coming soon)

Cloud sync is not available yet. It will be optional and off by default. When you turn it on, you sign in with your Google account so your data can follow you to your other devices. Until it is released, none of the data below is collected.

  • Account details: from Google, Transtube receives your Google account ID, email address, name and profile picture.
  • Synced data: your notes, finished summaries and key insights, prompt settings and display preferences are stored on Transtube’s server, which runs on Cloudflare. The service can read this data; it is not end-to-end encrypted.
  • Never synced: your API keys, your AI provider settings, your ChatGPT sign-in and the transcript cache stay on each device. On a new device you enter your key, or sign in with ChatGPT, once.
  • Sessions: a sign-in session lasts up to 90 days, and you can sign out at any time.

Permissions the extension asks for

  • Storage: to keep the settings and data listed above.
  • YouTube watch pages (youtube.com/watch): to show its panel beside the player.
  • api.openai.com, api.anthropic.com and generativelanguage.googleapis.com: so the background worker can call these AI providers.
  • Optional access to an address you enter, for an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The browser asks when you save it.
  • Optional access to 127.0.0.1 and auth.openai.com, plus the web request permission. They are asked for only when you connect a ChatGPT account, and are used only to read the sign-in redirect.

What Transtube does not do

  • No analytics, tracking or advertising.
  • No Transtube account and no server of ours that receives your notes, summaries, keys or transcripts, unless you turn on the optional cloud sync. Even then your keys and transcripts are never sent to us.
  • No selling or sharing of your data.

Your control

Clear a key or endpoint in the settings to stop sending requests to that provider. Removing the extension, or clearing its data in your browser, deletes everything it stored on your device.

Changes to this policy

If Transtube changes how it handles data, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change.
